Open Jam, The Beginning of Music Dream

At Main Stage Rehearsal Studios, our Open Jams turn musical passion into real opportunities. From a casual interest to joining local bands, their story shows how Main Stage helps keep the magic of music alive.

After attending Super Crawl two years ago, I moved to Hamilton. The artist community blew me away! We have a film industry here, art galleries, Fringe, Pride and more. As far as artistic pursuits, we have them all. I knew I was here for a long time. I work full-time in IT. I’m also a local journalist, and I’m a bunny mom.

Earlier this year, I was spellbound after seeing one of my favourite musicians live and up close, so much so that I wanted to join the tour! But how does one keep the music alive when the show is over? I was sad on my way home because I knew regular life would creep back in. It would all be a distant memory, but that’s when the Open Jam at Main Stage Rehearsal Studios broke through and changed everything!

I heard of the event on Instagram and thought it sounded intriguing, yet it could be a pro- industry thing and be quite dry. But it was the exact opposite! When I walked in, the crowd was warm and kind; there was friendly banter and an encouraging atmosphere. It was organized yet flexible.

Everyone could join in on songs they liked and explore their interests. The Open Jams were consistently held throughout the year, so I was able to really develop my talent for performing live. I’ve since had interest from local studios, bands, musicians and more. I even performed at the Casbah with a local rock band!

It’s been an incredible experience, helping me learn the ropes, make friends, network and, best of all, feel like the rock star I can be in my own world. It’s not about how major you are but about participating in the joys, you have in life. The Open Jam at Main Stage continues to grow that joy for hundreds of people in Hamilton, and it has forever changed me in the best of ways.

You never know if you don’t try, and this event is a place where you can learn, make mistakes laugh, experiment and grow with the best.

Highly recommended! By Janice Thiessen
